road trip: heavenly day at hausbar farms

road trip!
notes from maggie's farm

This month's Slow Food Austin Happy Hour was held at the farm and home of Susan Hausmann and Dorsey Barger, Hausbar Farms.  I was lucky enough to steal away a little bit of time from my own farm to join the party, meet my fellow blogger/friend Christy Horton, mingle with a few acquaintances, and be inspired by Dorsey and Susan's little piece of urban heaven.

Located in the hippest of spots on the East Side of Austin, the farm is a source of local vegetables, eggs, and meat for Eastside Cafe, co-owned by Barger, and located on Manor Road.

The weather was perfect, the food, sourced directly from the farm and prepared by Chef Matt Taylor of BC Tavern, was fresh and tasty, and the cocktails by Tipsy Texans, David Alan and Joe Eiflerwere, were freely flowing. Softly wafting musical strains filled the air, provided by Jerry Hagins and Crew. The guests, and their hosting animals, all decked out in their best farm-finery. It was an idyllic evening.  Hats off to Slow Food, and Hausbar Farms for sharing with us a storybook gathering.  I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story...

  1. I enjoyed that. The photos are wonderful. I especially like the shot of the bikes. The chickens outside their red house is another favorite.

  2. What an incredible place. The food looks great and with the Tipsy Texan making the drinks, I'm sure the cocktails were fabulous! Great pictures. PS Love me some Patty Griffin.

  4. Girl Why are you not doing photography professionally? These photos are fabulous-I just got done reading my Southern LIving mag and you seriously need to be putting a portfolio together to send to them. These are as good if not better as the ones I just looked at in the magazine. Seriously I mean really.............

    1. You are so very kind. One day I'm going to do a little upgrade and get some sharper photos. I don't like to get too close to people when I'm shooting, and I think I'd go a little farther if I had a zoom lense or two. That said, maybe I will put a portfolio together. Thank you for your encouragement!

  5. Wow..When I visit your blog, I wonder why I am living here in NYC when I could be there! Love your photos, and those chickens! Oh my..There is a woman in Colonial Williamsburg VA who walks around the village wiht a chicken in her arms (rare breed) and teaches everyone about them (in full period clothing mind you..) I saw her each of my 4 visits, and wish I had that job.
